About last night. Ouch!
October 8th, 2010
Greetings WhyHire.m
e participants. Last night, we had a system problem related to student account provisioning. Some of you that enrolled in WhyHire.me did not get immediate access to the eBook and portal. This was caused by a configuration mistake we made – lesson learned on our end.
The process is working now and some obvious improvements are being released this weekend in a system upgrade. We are adding a forgot my username feature and expect to improve the response time you are experiencing with the system. You can also expect some cosmetic menu changes.
Each of you are welcome to make any other usability suggestions and enhancement you think would improve the experience in WhyHire.me. Just head over to whyhire.me/support and submit the suggestion through a support request.
Enjoy the weekend!

Parents…get in the game. Shameful brands, clean up your act.
September 18th, 2010
The recent story about a sexual assault being documented on Facebook saddened me on so many levels. A young girl being assaulted and having it
documented and SHARED? What on earth has come over people? You can share your outrage by clicking here.
We are now seeing social media themes being weaved into the fall movie lineup. Sony’s Virginity Hit includes the trite old story of a young man desperate to lose his virginity. Video cameras and YouTube are heavily integrated into the film. How does a 13 year old interpret the “art” of this film in contrast to life happening online? Check out what my hero Amy Jussel has to say about how his film is being marketed. Pretty shameful practices.
I have to believe that the majority of students that saw the assault images were horrified and hopefully involved in reporting the crime and posting of the material. For those that did not, I might suggest their parents or guardians need to step in. From my viewpoint, I get the sense our youth are losing perspective on acceptable and appropriate behavior.
A friend and father came across a high school student on Facebook that suggested he was in the house and he was going to rape his daughter. He reported this “joke” to the student’s high school principal and community police officer. Needless to say, the young man’s parents were shocked at his behavior and said it was completely out of character.
For those that have tweens and teens that are using Facebook and other social media tools, I submit the following suggestions:
- Get in on the network. Insist you be friended and have full access to their wall and status updates. Keep an eye on what you see and make note of the language and material flying by. Find an opportunity to review some of the remarks or content that will invariably shock you.
- If you see something completely over the top, share the content with the parents of your child’s friends. Remember the old saying, it takes a village. A great tool for sharing online content is Jing – its free.
- Have a conversation about friending. Some kids think it’s a contest to friend the entire world. The general rule we advocate is, friend someone you would have into your home or have lunch with.
- Keep your computers and laptops on the main floor. Challenge your kids as to what they are sharing, viewing and interacting with. If you don’t think this is necessary, check out Chatroulette.com
Keep talking to your kids. They may begrudge your viewpoints, but they need to be parented. If we don’t step in and set boundaries, then be advised…web sites, movies and brands will keep feeding them whatever it takes to drive Internet traffic. For them, it’s all about the clicks, traffic and ticket sales. Parenting is not their priority.

Selecting a brand name for your WhyHire.me account
September 12th, 2010
Greetings new WhyHire.me participants!
Last year and this summer, we noted some students using nicknames, student numbers or slang for their WhyHire.me user name. Keep in mind, your user name will get used for your personal URL. Should you elect to use your WhyHire.me account for your job search efforts in coming summers or upon graduation, the user name you select will be part of your address.
My user name is andy_church
Hence, my person URL or WhyHire.me web site is http://whyhire.me/andy_church
Chose your account name wisely! The overall tone of your brand starts with your web site address.
If you would like to change your account name, head to http://whyhire.me/support and submit a help request.

Emergency management and crisis communications – time for a disruption
September 8th, 2010
Now that smart phones, SMS and social networking are becoming somewhat
mainstream, I cringe when I hear about product recalls in the food or product supply chain. A week does not pass without bad eggs, meat, brakes or asparagus being recalled or declared unsafe. Large brands are forced to flood the airways with press releases and gruesome details. Isolated cases in Chicago invariably go around the world thanks to hungry news outlets, RSS, social networks and bloggers that are posting press releases.
Meanwhile, consumers are at risk of missing such news since a good percentage of people are not tied to Twitter, Facebook or news sites 24 hours per day. They wait until they are good and ready or completely miss a news cycle – life is busy!
Thanks to unified notification (such as benbria.com) and the advent of social media, this entire model of top down crisis communications can be forever altered. Critical and near real-time updates can get to cell phones via sms, tweets, emails…all based on personal preferences and one’s location relative to the scope of the crisis.
Sounds simple enough – however, this is a massive undertaking that would involve;
- buy-in from large brands
- buy-in from logistics companies and inspection labs;
- and finally, cooperation from local, provincial and federal government departments
This is no small task! If anyone could pull this off, it would likely be an established brand that has access to consumers, brands and works with varying levels of government already. Canada Post is one such player that jumps to mind – they have access to all the key stakeholders and let’s face it…they have a long term interest in delivering information to a broad base of stakeholders. It’s what they do.
With any luck, top down crisis communications will be smarter, more targeted and save more lives when it counts.
A cool destination site for the consumer? http://inform.me of course

#plmkwysdt. Please let me know when you stop doing that.
August 28th, 2010
So you got my reply to your Foursquare update – #plmkwysdt.
Don’t take it personally, but I am checking out and I am no longer following you. There are too many interesting threads to follow and I am simply looking to cut down on meaningless information flowing into my Twitter feed.
Since I can’t receive your Foursquare updates in context and my Twitter client does not support filtering content out of my stream, I am forced to unfollow you. I really don’t need to know about trips to Lowes, Home Depot, Starbucks or the pub. Unless you ask me to join you:). Without question, a certain segment that is online all the time are keen on the badges and the honor of being designated mayor. Consider another viewpoint. Some people you are connected to don’t need to know these details.
If you come around to this viewpoint and you stop Tweeting your Foursquare updates, PLEASE let me know and I will start following you again. After all, you do have interesting news and views to share. It’s why I followed you in the first place!
All the best!
